Winter Carnival Parade, St. Paul, MN

The Northstar Newfoundland Club will once again participate in the St. Paul Winter Carnival Parade. As in past years, we will gather in a small parking lot at the corner of 7th St and Smith Ave for a bit of tailgating and then slip into the parade at our assigned location as it goes by (near the end). Parade starts at 2:00 but streets are closing before then so come early to park nearby or in the lot. For more and latest information see the event flyer, and Newflink emails.

Halloween Parade (map) (event flyer)
and Club Appreciation dinner (map), Anoka, MN

We have been selected to participate in the Anoka Halloween parade again. We are in Division 3 unit #30 so we are farther back this year. The parade begins in the vicinity of Rick Sorenson Park. See the event flyer for the parade map, parking guidance, HWY 169 detours, and our staging area, Div 3.

The Club Appreciation dinner will be after the parade at Willy McCoy's, 12450 Business Park Blvd. N., Champlin, MN 55316. Just off of 169 South leaving Anoka. They have a large parking lot and large patio area where our Newfs are allowed.

Notice that options getting from the end of the parade to the Club dinner on HWY 169, across the Rum and Mississippi Rivers, are quite limited during the parade. There is a foot bridge about two blocks south of the Main St. bridge connecting River Ave. on the east with Hwy 169 on the west. Parking on the west side of the foot bridge near HWY 169 could be a good choice, but with considerable walking after the parade end. Parking on the east side will be less walking after the parade, but you will have to drive the detour north around the parade area as shown on the event flyer to get on HWY 169. Your dog's endurance after the parade may influence your planning.

We will probably do some obedience work this year – Missy Manke is seeing if she can get an obedience trainer to come and give pointers on specific dog behavior issues that may be of interest. We will also talk about the December Specialty, possible upcoming parades, and the idea of having a banquet for club members in January, separated from the dog show.

Update: Thank you to Cheryl Gfrerer of Giffy Dog who attended our meeting and spoke about training with positive reinforcement. The techniques she presented were then demonstrated with some of our dogs. Lunch and the membership meeting followed Cheryl's presentation.

Annual Meeting and Banquet, St. Cloud, MN

The the Specialty judges and many of the exhibitors spent a relaxed and fun evening enjoying a post show banquet along with members of the Northstar Newfoundland Club. We were joined by other club members who had spent part of the day raising money for the Salvation Army by bell ringing with their Newfs at a nearby mall. It was great to bring together club members with a variety of interests and nearly doubled the attendance at our banquet, and reflects the diverse interests in our club. Duane Manke presided over our brown bag raffle and announced the results of our silent auction. -Chris

Newfoundland Specialty, Granite City Dog Shows,
St. Cloud, MN

The Northstar Newfoundland Club welcomed 14 dogs and their owners to St. Cloud, Minnesota for our annual winter specialty show. Exhibitors came from 4 Canadian provinces and 4 states. This year we took advantage of new AKC rules for small dog shows and had four opportunities for exhibitors to show in two days: two Northstar Newfoundland Club specialties and two all-breed shows (the Granite City Kennel Club). On each day the specialty used the same ring that Newfies had shown in earlier in the day, which made things very easy. Our specialty judges on Saturday were Dr. Fred Bock for the regular classes and Sandy Solcz for Sweepstakes. On Sunday Gary Bassett judged the regular classes and Chris Plum did Sweepstakes. – Chris

The rest had some very cute costumes on, including a School Bus,  a Fireman,  an Egyptian Dancer, an Angry Bird and even a newf dressed as a horse, saddle and all.
